Kelly Osbourne lost 70 pounds with fat-blasting M-Plan mushroom diet

Heard about the fat-shredding 'shroom diet, known as the M-Plan or Mushroom Diet? An increasing number of celebrities have, and Kelly Osbourne has lost 70 pounds after using it, according to the Huffington Post.

The metabolism-boosting M-Plan is relatively simple: Eat a mushroom dish in place of lunch or dinner for two weeks. Result: You'll lose four to 10 pounds, say advocates.

Before swooning for 'shrooms, Kelly tried to shed pounds with various weight loss fads. She swung her hips in hula-hoop parties and even switched her menus for the Reverse Diet (eating pizza for breakfast and oatmeal for dinner).

How does it work?

"If we eat more mushrooms, it’s likely that less high calorie foods will be consumed throughout the day over all because of the vegetable’s powerful nutritional values," nutritionist and health broadcaster Jeannette Jackson explained to the Daily Mail.

In addition, mushrooms are high in fiber and fill you up. The result: You can reduce your food intake without hunger pangs.

Bonus: "Mushrooms are also extremely rich in protein – an ideal nutritional food source yet the vegetable is low in calories which is important where weight loss is considered," said Jeannette.

She contends that mushrooms do more than boost weight loss: They also enhance your looks.

"Not only do mushrooms help with weight loss – the super vegetable can help improve your looks too given that mushrooms are high in B vitamins, iron and zinc, all of which are needed to make your skin, hair and nails strong, healthy and shiny," added Jeannette.

However, there's no magic, New York City registered dietician Tanya Zuckerbrot told ABC News in regard to some claims that the mushroom diet loses weight from targeted areas.

"I'm sure you will lose weight, but the fact remains that no food in particular can create targeted weight loss, said Tanya, author of "The Miracle Carb Diet: Make Calories and Fat Disappear--with Fiber!" (click for details).

Instead, it's based on scientific principles: Eat less calories, lose weight all over.

"Whether it's mushroom or steak, the laws of thermodynamics dictate, if you consume less calories, you will lose weight," concluded Tanya.
