It was difficult to miss Kelly Clarkson at the 2013 Grammys on Sunday evening (Feb. 10). She seemed to be just about everywhere: On the red carpet, on the Internet, backstage, on stage, in the audience. And if that wasn't enough, she had to get up, get back on stage, and accept an award. She even had the best acceptance speech...
"So sorry, I got stuck to Miranda Lambert!" Clarkson said in the mic. And she had. When it was announced she had won the award for Best Pop Album (Stronger), a hug with Lambert involved getting attached to her shiny dress. "There's a story and a song, for later ... after alcohol. I'm just kidding, children! I get nervous speaking in front of people."
Nervous or no, she won over the audience -- and viewers at home -- with her excitability.
"I didn't know I was gonna win because I literally – I was so excited to be in a category – fun., I have been covering you all summer. I'm sorry, I love that song. I think it's so awesome. I love Pink, everyone – Adele – that I was in the category with," she meandered.
"Miguel?" she then queried, giving a questioning shout-out to the singer who performed earlier in the night (a remix of his award-winning "Adorn") with Wiz Khalifa. "I don't know who the hell you are but we need to sing together, I mean good God that was the sexiest damn thing I've ever seen. WHAT!?"
"American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest and judge Randy Jackson were caught on camera laughing along with Clarkson's rambling honesty. (She would also later take a photo with Miguel.)
But the first ever "American Idol" winner wasn't finished. There were people to thank, like her fiance, Brandon Blackstock.
"Anyway, thank you so much friends, family, label, my manager," she continued. "Thank you so much, my fiancé who is sexy tonight, y'all! I did not think I was going to win. Thank you!"
Clarkson would later pay tribute to Patti Paige and Carole King, two 2013 Grammy Lifetime Achievement honorees, singing Paige's "Tennessee Waltz" and King's "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman," the former seamlessly slipping into the latter.
The girl was on a roll. She even became the biggest hit on Twitter when she photobombed Ellen Degeneres and Portia di Rossi when a photographer stopped to take pictures. She leaned out from behind the couple with a "Look who I'm sitting with" cocked finger. The Whatever Blog at the Dallas News wrote that former President Bill Clinton's photobombing of Clarkson at the inaugural last month undoubtedly had the "My Life Would Suck Without You" singer looking for just the right moment. And it looks as if she found it.
So... An award, an Internet hit, the best speech, and a knockout performance. Kelly Clarkson was a one-woman entertainment industry at the awards ceremony.
The Black Keys, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Mumford & Sons might have been big winners on the night (in the number of awards they all received), but it would be easy to argue that Kelly Clarkson might have been the biggest winner of all. She's certainly an "American Idol" winner about whom it never has been questioned whether or not viewers "got it right."
