Kelley's Heroes - Kelley's Heroes
2008 Retrospect Records
The CD’s insert proclaims, “With their aggressive straight forward style, and heavyweight title swagger, Kelley’s Heroes was easily crowned the undisputed champs of the LA music scene!” That is a bold statement to make. With bands like Young Gunns and Jones Street (also with Anthony Focx) around you better deliver. That statement is not just hype. Kelley’s Heroes more than holds their own against anyone.
Vince and Marty Kelley were in Tommi Gunn along with Anthony Focx before Kelley’s Heroes. They hailed from Chicago and ruled the strip in the late 80’s. For whatever reason, they never made it with their glam metal style. They did a complete one eighty in look and sound with Kelley’s Heroes. They became a hard hitting sleaze metal band. The shocking thing is how well they did it. They not only eclipsed their previous bands work, but did sleaze better than most of their contemporaries.
From start to finish this release is hard hitting in your face metal. Just about every song on here could be considered a highlight track. A few of the songs that will blow you away are Hard Edge, Down for the Count, and Nervous Breakdown. The production and inserts match the quality of the music. Retrospect has come a long way in the last few years. Their current releases can now be compared to any major label. All around this is a great release.
One question some may be left with is what if Tommi Gunn had been signed? They were pretty big and came close to making it. They no doubt would have released some great music, but would it have matched this masterpiece? It’s something to ponder.
Check out Kelley’s Heroes at their website and Myspace page. Once you get a taste you will no doubt want your own copy. Their CD can be purchased at Retrospect Records.
