Last night, celebrities ascended on the red carpet and participated in the Do Something Awards, which has been called "the Oscars for young people in service" by CNN. The organization was started in 1993 by Andrew Shue, one of the stars of the original Melrose Place.
The big winner last night was 23-year-old Jessica Posner, who walked away with an award of $100,000.
Jessica co-founded Shining Hope for Communities to combat gender inequity and poverty in Kibera. Through the Kibera School for Girls, the first free school in Kibera, and the Shining Community Center, Jessica has helped over 5,700 residents gain education and employment.
There were celebrity winners, too. Christina Applegate won the Do Something Kick-A-- for Survival Award, and Twilight star Kellan Lutz was given the Do Something for Animals award. Snoop Dogg even went home a winner as recipient of the Do Something for Kids award. Other winners include The Jonas Brothers, Tyra Banks, and Kathy Griffin.
