Keith Urban ‘horrified’ at alleged rape taking place during his concert

On August 2, WPRI quoted country western superstar and “American Idol” judge Keith Urban as being “horrified” at the prospect that a 17-year-old female fan was raped at Urban’s July 26 concert on the lawn of the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts, while other concert goers recorded the sexual assault on their cell phones and only one bystander intervened and went to the victim’s rescue. Eighteen-year-old Sean Murphy of Boston was arrested and charged with rape following the alleged sexual assault, and has pleaded not guilty.

The 17-year-old victim said that she hadn’t consented to having sex with Murphy; although Murphy claimed that the sex was consensual. After hearing about the alleged assault, the country star married to actress Nicole Kidman posted on his Facebook page “our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected. This type of behavior stands in stark contrast to the spirit of our shows.”

CBS News in Boston reported that the concertgoers videotaping the assault were unaware they were actually witnessing a sexual assault. Murphy was only one of 50 people arrested at Urban’s concert in Mansfield, just south of Boston. The majority of those taken into custody “were arrested or treated for alcohol poisoning,” and not involved with Murphy’s alleged assault.

The one concertgoer to intervene in the alleged rape actually walked up to Murphy while he was on top of the girl during the concert. According to documents filed by the Mansfield Police Department, that Good Samaritan went up to a police officer during the concert to report a possible rape taking place on the front lawn of the Xfinity Center.

The witness told the officer she approached the 17-year-old, who was on the ground with the suspect on top of her, and asked her if the "event" was consensual. The girl allegedly told the witness that it wasn't.

That Good Samaritan reportedly “pushed the suspect off of the alleged victim.” After that, the alleged rape victim reportedly "[broke] free" and ran away. Murphy also ran away into the crowd.

The Xfinity Center went into lockdown mode. After getting Murphy’s description from the concertgoers who witnessed the event, police searched the gates for their suspect.

Murphy has been charged with one count of rape, according to The Boston Globe. Police are using the video evidence of the event obtained by bystanders in the area as evidence in their investigation.

Murphy’s lawyer released a statement earlier this week saying that the sex between Murphy and the 17 year old during the concert was indeed consensual. “This was a private act that regrettably occurred in a public place. Mr. Murphy deeply regrets this incident and I’m sure the young woman does as well.”
