Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and his wife, Patti Hansen, have bought a four-bedroom, four-bathroom penthouse in New York City for $10.5 million. According to a report published by real-estate website The Real Deal on March 5, 2014, the penthouse is located at 1 Fifth Avenue (in New York City's Greenwich Village), and the home's original asking price was $15 million when it was put on the market in December 2012. The penthouse's previous owners were Edward and Reka Darida Schmidt, who have not publicly commented on the sale.
According to the Real Deal, the duplex penthouse has "three terraces on the lower level; the listing details a collection of custom features including white lacquer millwork, marble slab bathrooms and a Sonos sound system throughout."
Richards and Hansen have a special place in their hearts for New York City, since it's where they met, fell in love, and lived as their main home base for the first two decades of their relationship. The couple got married on Richards' 40th birthday on Dec. 18, 1983. Richards and Hansen have two daughters together: Theodora (born in 1985) and Alexandra (born in 1986), who were both born and primarily raised in New York City, where they continue to live. Richards has two other children (son Marlon and daughter Angela) from a previous relationship with ex-girlfriend Anita Pallenberg.
Richards owns several homes in other locations, including in Connecticut, England, Jamaica and Turks and Caicos. He and Hansen bought a home in Weston, Conn., in 2002, but the recent purchase of the penthouse marks the return of Richards and Hansen having a home in New York City's Greenwich Village. During the 1980s and 1990s, he and Hansen famously lived in an apartment in the Silk Building above Tower Records at 14 E. Fourth Street in New York City's Greenwich Village. At one time, Cher was one of their neighbors. (Tower Records closed in 2006, long after Richards and Hansen moved out of the Silk Building.) Other famous residents of the Silk Building over the years have included Britney Spears and business mogul Russell Simmons.
