In a move that might cause some conservatives to think the law of gravity was just repealed, Current TV's Keith Olbermann called for a boycott of Starvingeyes Advergaming over their new online video game "Tea Party Zombies Must Die!"
The game is a first person shooter where one enters a post-apocalyptic Fox News and kills various Fox News personalities like Brit Hume and Bill O'Reilly and characters recognized as Tea Party leaders. A Glenn Beck zombie is included, as well as Sean Hannity, Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin.
The Blaze reported:
The far-left Olbermann, clearly offended by the game, clarified for his audience that, “It doesn’t matter how you feel about those people…there is no place for this.“ He added that there is ”no excuse“ for being the ”thing,” or, person, that “tips a mental case” over the edge to carry out an act of violence against one of the people featured in the game, or tips “another mental case” to exact revenge against a political opponent.
Mediaite's Tommy Christopher wrote that Olbermann - a long time critic of conservatives and the Tea Party - "deserves credit for two reasons."
First of all, silence costs nothing. He didn’t have to mention it at all, and the fact that he did shows that he’s got a healthier perspective on his relationship with Fox than you might have expected.
Second, Olbermann resists (or never feels) the urge to deflect his outrage at this game with examples of the same against liberals. While it bears noting, as Jon Bershad did, that right-wing overreaching condemnations of all liberals based on this game are ridiculous and unfair, Olbermann recognizes that the greater offense is the game itself, and rightly denounces it.
One can argue the point Christopher makes by saying the game is just a symptom of the hate that exists on the far left - these are people who have expressed a desire to engage in rough hate sex with Republican candidates and wished death on Republicans and their supporters.
The condemnation from the right is not overreaching considering the vile hate spewed by the left every day.
Olbermann does deserve kudos for calling out the creators of this game, but he is by no means softening his view of conservatives.
Although Starvingeyes earned a spot on his "Worst Persons" segment, he finished by taking shots at GOP Presidential candidates Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann.
