Keira Knightley reveals family anorexia history: Mom and grandma were anorexic

Actress Keira Knightley has long denied rumors she's anorexic, but revealed she has a family history of anorexia.

“I’ve got a lot of experience with anorexia," Knightley told Express Feb. 2. "My grandmother and my great-grandmother suffered from it and I had a lot of friends at school who suffered from it, so I don’t think it’s anything to be taken lightly.”

Over the years, numerous media reports have speculated that the willowy 5-foot-7 Keira is suffering from an eating disorder, but she has insisted her fat-free figure is due to good genes, a fast metabolism, and an active lifestyle.

“The very thought of a diet makes me want chips and ice cream, and I just hate going to the gym,” said Knightley, 28. “The most exercise I get is turning on the TV.”

In 2012, Knightley credited Pilates workouts and a portion-controlled diet for her slender body, and said persistent anorexia rumors made her insecure about her looks.

"The anorexic stuff is always going to have an impact, so I think it did hit pretty hard," said Keira. "I knew I wasn't anorexic, but [it made me think] maybe my body is somehow not right. Or my face is not right.

Knightley is now happily married to British musician James Righton of London-based new rave band, Klaxons. Keira is focused on her thriving acting career, and said acting is a tough, competitive profession fraught with unemployment and insecurity, but she's grateful to be working.

“There aren’t that many female roles,” she said. “There are way fewer than there are for men and that’s always been the case, so there’s a lot of competition and a lot of wonderful actresses. It is what it is, and [I always think] I was very lucky to get this job.”
