Keeping your pet protected from the summer heat

Summer time is upon us once again.  As the temperature begins to raise it is important that all pet owners take special precautions to keep their pets happy and healthy throughout the summer months.  No matter if your pet spends their time inside or out, alone or with a family member being aware of what your pet needs can help prevent unnecessary trips to the vet.

For pets that spend their time outside:

  • Ensure that your pet has a shady spot available at all times.  Check on your pet throughout the day to ensure that he is never without shade.
  • Provide your pet with fresh, cool water daily.  Ice cubes are not only a good way to keep your pet’s water cooler longer but can provide a fun activity for your pet to do.
  • Keep an eye on your pet’s food dish.  Some animals will not eat their food if insects or small animals get into the dish.  Also, having an idea of how much your pet is eating daily is always a good idea.
  • Take your pet for walks in the early morning or early evening when it is cooler outside.  Walking during the hottest part of the day is tiring for pets and owners.

For pets that spend their time inside:

  • If your pet is home during the day take this into consideration when setting the temperature controls on your air conditioner.  It may be tempting to set the temperature high during the day but remember that your pet is just as miserable in the heat as you would be.
  • Provide your pet with plenty of fresh, cool water and make sure that there are shady spots throughout the house where your pet can relax away from the heat.
  • Some pets do not like to leave the comforts of the house in order to relieve themselves outside.  If you pet is like this, make sure you are letting them out in the morning and early evening.  Alternately, have a cool spot outside available for your pet.
  • Have a number of toys available for your pet to play with.  Pets have a tendency to get destructive when bored which is likely to happen once your pet is cooped up inside during the hottest hours of the day.  Alternating which toys are available to your pet every day keeps things fun and interesting.
