What is the big picture?

When you ask professionals of any industry this question, they will tell you something about their industry, what they do, and maybe some best practices. They might even go so far as to “toot their own horn” and tell you why they are an expert in their space. That might even be what you do.

But do you ask, “The big picture of WHAT”? The answer above is the right answer is the question is to get a better understanding of what you do. But sometimes the question is less specific and more personal: What is the big picture of what you want for your LIFE?

At the beginning of the year, we are eager to implement changes, act on smart advice, and make new habits. And those are admirable actions; but before you start – consider what direction you want move your life toward, rather than just away from where you are.

The BIG PICTURE in life will have many components, your career is a big one – but only one of the parts. Ensure that the other facets of your life (home, relationships, physical health, financial health, volunteering, and personal fulfillment) all get time on your radar. A balanced life doesn’t mean that every facet will have equal time all the time or even the same kind of financial or emotional commitment. But a balanced life will at least have some participation in more facets than one.

Remember: you will be involved in your LIFE much longer that you will be at any job or career. Make the commitment to yourself and your goals while making the commitment to others and their goals too.
