WTJU 91.1 FM in Charlottesville, Virginia has been the volunteer-run radio station on the University of Virginia grounds since 1957.
Recently, WTJU management moved to pull the plug on the 53 year-old free-form style under which the station has always operated. Management wanted to institute playlists, put certain songs in rotation, and revamp the format completely.
Local activist Brandon Collins jumped at the chance to prevent the stifling of cherished local art. "Keep WTJU weird!", is the slogan. Brandon acted immediately; pooling resources in the community, working with WTJU staff, and rallying people via social media. Within two days the earnest work of hundreds of people halted the plans and forced the respective administrations reconsider.
Brandon is an organizer for the Socialist Party, and an active member of Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice.
