Keeping the peace during sibling rivalry when your dogs are fighting

Some homes are content with just one pet as they can be a handful but multiple pet homes are numerous. If you have one, what’s one more? Majority of the time they entertain each other and create a bond like siblings in a family. However, just as with children, they aren’t always so fond of each other all the time. As the pet-parent, you have to be able to keep the peace to avoid any injuries. Sometimes it is just a matter of training the dogs and you can contact your local Rockford-area Petsmart or Petco as listed below or one closest to your home for advice on training and the tools necessary for success.

Before moving forward with training, it is important to rule out any medical issues or other concerns that may be the cause for anxiety and fear in one of the dogs. Once given a clean bill of health, you can devise a plan for basic obedience and proper, effective socialization skills.

Most dogs that fight amongst each other are those of the same sex, especially females. It does help in getting your dogs spayed or neutered to ward off some of the aggressive tendencies. Since a dog is a pack animal, there will always be a problem with dominance in the home, which is why it is so imperative that you claim that role immediately. That way you are setting the ground rules for your dogs to follow; they will then look up to you and not fight so much with each other for that dominance and hierarchical position in the family.

One of the most effective commands to get your dog’s attention immediately is the “leave it” command. It is a way to teach your dog how to focus on you. In the midst of the fighting, it is a way to get each dog’s attention. Some informative articles are listed below in helping you to achieve this technique with your dogs. Once your dogs are successful in the focus command, you can train them to drop whatever they were fussing over in the first place and come to you.

Be observant to the signs of an impending dog fight in the family such as the eye contact, growling, tension build up, stiffening or any other body language you witness. You now have the tools to stop an impending fight before it starts. With your consistency, leadership as the alpha dog and observations, you can help the dogs in your family to get along, at least most of the time.
