Keeping Pucks at Bay in Lowell

Normally when discussing the UMass Lowell River Hawks Hockey team the discussion only leads to one thing…the inquiry about the start of the baseball season.  After a lackluster 5-25-4 record last season the mighty Blaise MacDonald stepped down after his 10 year run. Worn down by the grind that is competing in the Hockey East.

Flash forward to early December.  Under new Head Coach Norm Bazin the River Hawks find themselves swimming in an unfamiliar pond; The top tier of the Hockey East Standings.  Add a #18 ranking in the USCHO.com polls and college hockey at the Tsongas Arena has never been better.  Though the River Hawks feature a balanced scoring attack the key to their sudden surge in the standings has been standout sophomore goalie Doug Carr.  Carr has navigated his way through the Hockey East elite with an astounding 8 – 1 record to go along with a .935 save percentage and 1.78 goals against average.

Carr continues to turn heads throughout college hockey begging the question, just where did he come from?  He comes to the city of Cotton Mills fresh from the Canadian Junior Hockey League.  The stellar backstop grew up in Hanover, Massachusetts where he grew up defending his net with pride.

After a tough season in 2010-2011 Carr has caught the attention of NHL teams and is a surefire draft prospect next spring.  In the meantime the powerhouses of Hockey East be warned.  The local puck men in Lowell have a stingy goalie tending the crease next to the Merrimack River and if he continues his winning ways midnight may never arrive for the Cinderella River Hawks.
