“Kitsch” has been defined as “tastelessness.” Perhaps when some people try to decorate in the kitsch style, but that doesn’t have to be the case. It is possible to “go kitsch” and it not be tasteless. In fact, kitsch can be classy - if you are creative, think ahead and have a plan to create a theme.
Bedroom Kitsch - Try a dance theme in your kitschy bedroom. Photos and posters of dancers make great wall art. Place a brass birdcage and hang a pair of ballet slippers on the swing inside the cage. Use feather boas as a window valance. Attach rhinestones and faux pearls to dressers and chests.
Kitchen Kitsch - Try a gingham check theme in your kitschy kitchen. Of course, you will have to use all the different colors of gingham checks available to you to add the kitsch. Create kitchen curtains with both yellow and purple gingham checks, dividing them equally on opposite sides of the window. Place a memo board on a kitchen wall, covered in green gingham check material. Add pink ribbon in a criss-cross pattern to hole shopping lists, photos, receipts and the like.
Living Room Kitsch - Try a travel theme in your living. Create a collage using maps and travel brochures. Hang it above the mantel. Place souvenirs (such as figurines) on your end tables and coffee table. Photos from your past trips in mismatched frames make great wall art.
Bathroom Kitsch - Try a jungle theme in your kitschy bathroom. Create a valance with stuffed monkeys, lions and other jungle animals. Add silk vines and over-sized flowers in any gaps you may see. Hang a jungle-themed shower curtain. Use “treasures” such as faux bars of gold, shrunken heads, tribal art and the like as accessories on the bathroom counter. Tuck primitive-looking woven baskets in corners and on your counters to hold towels, toilet tissues and toiletries.
Go kitsch in your home and keep it (semi-) classy. Get creative. Craft a plan. Stick with the theme you planned. Tastelessness is not necessary to a kitsch décor.
