What do you do if the interviewer asks a ‘random’ question? How should you react if the question doesn’t relate to your skills? Job seekers who haven’t interviewed in awhile may find themselves caught off guard if an interviewer starts to stray from basic questions. Here are some ways to be prepared and bring the focus of the interviewer back to the skills you have.
- Think about the key skills the job description lists and be ready to answer those questions with specific examples of your past experiences in exhibiting those skills. Try to have a couple of examples that are from different jobs and/or different organizations so you show your flexibility.
- If you are thrown a curveball question, take a breath. Giving yourself a moment to think about how to answer will allow you time to consider how the answer can address the skills you can bring to the job.
- When an interviewer asks about something that is not relevant to the job, work on answering with a direct reference to the job description.
As a candidate in the interview process, it is important to stay focused on how your skills can provide value to the organization you are interviewing with. By preparing answers with varied examples, you will be confident and able to handle questions with information that will show the interviewer the abilities you have that are relevant to the job.
