Keep your kids active on a rainy day

It is important to keep children active and incorporate physical education into their days. Even on rainy days, it is necessary to keep their minds and bodies busy.

Get Creative
Build an indoor jungle gym out of furniture in your home. If you have a bench, it can be used as a balance beam. Chairs can be used as a launch point to jump off into a pile of pillows and blankets. A piece of strong, smooth board can be set up to use as a slide. A big open space can be set up as an obstacle course. Get creative with the materials you have handy in your house.

Go Out
There are numerous options in the Charleston area. There are ice and roller skating rinks. The South Carolina Aquarium in Downtown Charleston has areas for children to play. It is geared more to the younger elementary and toddler age. The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, also in Downtown Charleston, is a great place for all ages to run around in and be active. Both the South Carolina Aquarium and Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry provide a way to buy family memberships to save money. There are indoor play areas that have open play that don't require you to be a member, such as Rolly Pollies and Celebration Town. Both are in the Summerville area. Check their websites for the open gym times and the prices. Find an indoor swimming pool for a swim or an indoor gym to shoot some hoops or run around the track. Those are only a few of the many choices in the area.

Simple Solutions
If you have the space or can move things around in the room to create an open environment, you can jump rope or hula-hoop. Put on some fun music and dance around the house. Kids can have races from one side of the room to the other, as long as there is nothing to trip on. There are games that require kids to move around and have active play, such as Wii games, ThinkFun has some games, and you can find apps on the iPad. You can find exercise videos specially designed for children with music, dancing, and fun moves. There are even ones for preschool age children.

Try to keep the kids active for at least 30 minutes a day. It is best to teach them good habits of being physically active from an early age.
