Keep your eye out on Kevin Hoskins

“You have to check out Kevin Hoskins,” said Channel Rodgers, amateur boxer from Inland Empire. I did….

Last time out at Pechanga Resort and Casino it only took talented super featherweight 128 seconds to drop Angel Torres twice on the way to a first round TKO victory. Hoskins looked polished and powerful.

“This guy is a beast!’ cried out a fan sitting next to me following the explosive knock out.

“The fans motivate you,” said Hoskins when I ran into him this week at the Ten Goose boxing gym in Van Nuys, California:” Especially when you get good comments. They motivate you. So, I appreciate that. In the pro game we work hard, we are dedicated to it so we can have wins like that.”

But not all professional boxing careers are paved with gold. Bad advice, bad management or just plain bad luck, Kevin has tasted highs and lows.

“When did you turn pro?” I asked

“When I was eighteen,” replied Hoskins (5-0,4KO’S):” I am twenty one, but my second pro fight was a 27 second knock out and then I had a year lay off from that and then I had two more fights and then I had another year lay off. The business end of the game has just been crazy for me. So 2012 is my year.”

Gifted young prospect is currently training at Tru Boxing gym in Los Angeles under the watchful eye of veteran trainer, former boxer, Jerry Rosenberg. Obviously twenty one year old fighter from Moreno Valley is not going to follow in footsteps of Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya. But how far can he go?

“ We are going to take it far, because I am so dedicated to the sport,” said Hoskins who invited me to check his training session at the Tru Boxing gym on La Brea:” I love the sport so much I work hard and when you work so hard your confidence is sky high. And with confidence and skills you can go far and I think I got it.”

Keep your eye out on this young fighter. I have a feeling he might be opening some eye brows really soon.
