Baby, it’s cold outside!
Today’s expected high in Milwaukee is 10 degrees. The low is -4 degrees. BRRR! It’s easy for people to dress in layers, wear thicker socks and don heavier coats. Keeping warm can be a bit more challenging for your cat – even if s/he is an indoor kitty. This article will hopefully provide you with some ideas to keep your cat cozy during this winter chill.
Like many good cat parents, I want my kitty to be warm & cozy, especially when temperatures dip below zero. I got her an electric heating pad for Christmas from a local pharmacy. It’s designed for people, but I thought it was a good idea. I haven’t used it yet, however, because I am reconsidering my purchase.
After much thought and some research, I decided it’s better to get a heating pad designed for pets. The danger with human heating pads is they can actually make your cat too warm – even causing a fever. Plus, you never want to leave an electrical item on without supervision.
Cats have the innate ability to regulate their body temperature, so a heating element really isn't necessary. It is, however, ideal for older cats, and it’s definitely appreciated by most felines. PETCO has a nice assortment of cold weather comfort products for your cat – everything from heating pads to beds to houses.
A Variety of Warming Products Available
This bed warmer has a dual thermostat and only warms when kitty is in bed. It is a great option for placing underneath your cat’s favorite blanket or bed.
Another non-electric option is a self-warming pad. These are designed for dog crates, but can absolutely be used as kitty’s new curl-up spot. The warming pad radiates your cat’s natural body heat back to her/him. And, it is conveniently machine washable.
A self-warming bed is a great idea, too, and allows your cat to sleep in cozy comfort. Like the warming pad, this bed radiates heat back to kitty, and is machine washable.
If you have outdoor cats or wish to provide shelter to outdoor felines, this heated outdoor A-frame provides a warm shelter made of waterproof fabric. It also includes a heated bed and has room for up to four cats.
As experienced cat parents, we all know that our furry children are the experts in staying warm and finding the coziest places to curl up. On the coldest of winter days, however, our feline friends will appreciate the extra warmth and comfort provided by these heated products.
