Keep these top five ingredients on hand for healthy smoothies for people on-the-go

Smoothies are a great option for healthy on-the-go eating. They take little time to prepare and only a few ingredients are needed to make them. Not only are they portable, they can be made for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They are healthy alternatives to eating grab-n-go options from fast food restaurants or gas stations. 

In order to create a smoothie making routine in the household there are five ingredients that must be kept in stock. 

The top 5 ingredients are:

1. Spinach, yes spinach! Spinach is a very nutritious item to have on hand. It is rich in iron, chlorophyll and vitamins A and vitamin C. According to Paul Pitchford in his book, “Healing with Whole Foods,” he states that spinach “cleanses the blood of toxins that cause skin disease and discharges marked by redness and inflammation.” So, why would you forget to add this ingredient into your smoothie?

2. Cacao powder.  Cacao powder makes the smoothie taste great and for the chocolate lovers is a must.  Cacao powder is made from the cacao bean and is high in antioxidants, magnesium, iron, chromium, zinc, copper, vitamin C, omega-6 fatty acids, trptophan, serotonin, fiber and cardiovascular cleansing compounds according to David Wolfe's book "Superfoods".  With all these benefits it's no wonder chocolate is so delectable.  So, enjoy this treat and feel good about it.

3. Almond milk. Almond milk creates a great base for a smoothie recipe. It is a great alternative for those that are lactose intolerant because it does not contain lactose. As opposed to cow's milk, almond milk also does not contain cholesterol or saturated fat. And lastly, according to the label on Blue Diamond's Almond Breeze carton, this milk contains calcium, vitamins A, D, and E. So, this milk is worth a try for those that are lactose intolerant or just wanting variety.

4. Fruit. All types of fruit can be used to create any type of smoothie. One helpful tip is to buy a couple of bunches of organic bananas at a time. Keep one bunch of bananas for immediate eating and the other bunch to peel and place in freezer bags and freeze. The next time a smoothie is to be made, a frozen banana will make a delightful creamy smoothie. Frozen fruit is a must to keep in stock because of its nutritional value and for its lasting convenience.

5. Ice. OK, so maybe this is not necessarily an ingredient, but it is needed to make a nice cold smoothie. Use more ice to create a thick smoothie and less ice for a more liquid smoothie. This ingredient is great because it comes without calories and it is filling.

  • Chocolate-Blueberry Almond Smoothie
  • Serves: 1
  • 3/4 cup organic almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons frozen organic blueberries
  • 1/2 tablespoon unsweetened cacao powder
  • 1/4 cup crushed ice
  • Place all ingredients in the blender, blend until smooth
  • Pour into a chilled glass. Serve immediately
  • Green Monster Smoothie
  • Serves: 3-4
  • 3 ounces (1/2 6oz bag) of organic baby spinach
  • 1 organic apple, cored and sliced into 4 pieces
  • 1/2 organic lemon, peeled
  • 2 organic bananas, preferably frozen
  • 8 ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup purified water or to desired consistency
  • Place all ingredients in the blender, blend until smooth
  • Pour into a chilled glass. Serve immediately
