As the first week of 2013 approaches a close, many people are wavering on resolutions made to improve their health. A fun way to remain inspired is to plan to take part in any of the several 5k races that are held throughout the year from the Hotcake Hustle to the Rat Race Urban Adventure Series. Dallas is rich in a wide variety of races sure to appeal to any interest, including:
- Snowman Shuffle. Yes, this event has actually had snow at times! Held on the shores of White Rock Lake, the unique element to this race is that not only does it have awards broken down by ages, but also weights! Are you a 150+ pound female Athena? Or a 214+ pound male Clydesdale? If so, this might be just the 5k for you! This race will take place on Saturday, January 19.
- Hypnotic Donut Dash. This decadent race will take place at Fair Park on January 26 will embrace the love of running and donuts -- though, for the hard core, you can run without partaking of the tasty donuts. But for those that wish to embrace the pastry goodness, the organizers have everything from Donut Hole Stations along the course to a Chubby Bunny contest.
- Dash Down Greenville. This popular race is held each year before the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. Clad yourself in your best green running gear, enjoy this spectator rich race, and give it your all to hopefully win some cash prizes before indulging in the beer garden. Saturday, March 16.
- Vampire 5k. Why? Because "running sucks"! This multi-city race will be held in Dallas at Fair Park and participants can sign up as clans of vampires or citizens. If you think running sucks but you’d still like to be a part of the chase as a vampire, they have a non-runner vampire pass that will allow you to hang out on the course, throw red powder packs and try to pull flags off (transform) any unwitting citizen that runs by. (It would be so fitting for this race to have the legendary Dallas-based band Ghoultown perform afterward!). This race will take place April 26.
These races provide just a highlight of the diversity of several upcoming 5k races. For more options both locally and state-wide, Run On! has a in-depth listing at this link: http://www.runontexas.com/races.
