“Deliriously funny! Comic acting raised to the level of high art!” – The New York Times said of the forthcoming comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a Christopher Durang, Tony Award Winning Play to be directed by KC Rep’s Artistic Director Eric Rosen in co-production with Baltimore’s Center Stage.
Kansas City Repertory Theatre added Durang’s Tony Award-winning Broadway hit comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike to its spring 2014 lineup, running March 14 – April 6 at Spencer Theatre on the UMKC campus
According to KC Rep, in bucolic Bucks County, PA, Vanya and his sister Sonia have frittered their lives away living in the same farmhouse where they were raised. Their quiet existence of unease and regret, however, is rocked by the arrival of their glamorous movie star sister (and landlord) Masha, and her hunky boy toy, Spike. As their visit unfolds, a lifetime of sibling rivalry explodes into a weekend of comedic pyrotechnics.
“Christopher Durang (The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains it All For You, My America) weaves Chekhovian themes and modern wit into an unforgettable experience critics have hailed as “a sublime state of hilarity” (New York Magazine),” a KC Rep press release stated.
“I have been a fan of both Christopher Durang and Anton Chekhov since high school, and I am thrilled to be directing this regional premiere in both my new hometown, Kansas City, and my family's hometown, Baltimore,” Rosen said.
“Chekhov famously opined that his brooding, angst-filled plays were comedies, and Durang has shown the world that Chekhov was right. Pulling characters from famous Chekhov plays and placing them in a contemporary Bucks County crumbling family manse is absurd — and Durang is a master of the form. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a deeply funny, profoundly smart, and ultimately moving comedy, and I can't wait to share our co-production with the great audiences at Kansas City Rep and Center Stage.”
Originally commissioned by the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey in association with Lincoln Center Theater, the Broadway cast for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike included David Hyde Pierce and Sigourney Weaver. In addition to its 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, the play also received top honors from New York Drama Critics’ Circle, Drama League and Drama Desk.
The production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike replaces Larry Shue’s The Foreigner which moved into an earlier October 2013 slot.
