CinemaKC and the Kansas City Film Critics Circle will be holding a special screening of Kansas City John D. Hancock's new film, "Swan Song", at the Screenland Theatre at Crown Center on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.

The screening will give Kansas City film buffs a chance to rub elbows with and maybe even pick the brain of a local boy turned Academy Award nominee. The evening will begin with a preshow mixer which starts at 6 p.m. Then, John D. Hancock will be on hand for the film's screening, which begins at 7 p.m. Following the film, the director will take part in a Q&A with the audience.

Born in Kansas City in 1939, Hancock garnered an Academy Award nomination for his short film, "Sticky My Fingers... Fleet My Feet," which was nominated for a Short-Subject Live-Action Academy Award and released nationally along with the Woody Allen feature "Bananas".

Hancock is probably best known for directing the 1973 film "Bang the Drum Slowly", starring Robert De Niro, Michael Moriarty, and Vincent Gardenia, who snagged was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dutch Schnell.

"Swan Song" tells the story of Julie, a 13-year-old girl who moves to Indiana to live with her grandmother, Karen, a former star of stage and screen, who desperately wants find a way to connect with her granddaughter in a meaningful way and share her history. As they struggle to find common ground, Karen discovers that Julie has a unique and powerful singing voice.
