The Kansas City Chiefs completed their rookie mini-camp Sunday with their 38 players invited and coaches, broadcasters and many media members in attendance have nothing but good things to say about what happened during the past three days.
Head coach, Romeo Crennel, spoke glowingly about players such as first-round pick, Dontari Poe, as well as fourth-round receiver Devon Wylie as the players went through a ton of drills. Poe stood out from the rest of the players simply because of the individual attention he got from Crennel and defensive line coach, Anthony Pleasant.
Even undrafted rookie free agent, Luke Patterson, got some love from Mike Florio at NBC Sports and their Pro Football Talk in one of those classic, “Did anyone actually say anything of value in this article?” pieces.
The problem is, no one can believe much of what is being said here in Kansas City, or anywhere else around the league. Because of the new rules regarding what players can and cannot do under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, there is absolutely no physical contact between players until training camps start in late July. None.
For the first time ever, none of the mini-camps, off-season training activities (OTA’s), or any team-related workouts will have contact between players. Therefore, KC fans will have to wait until the heat of August to know if Poe can move an offensive lineman with his first explosion off the ball, or if Wylie can get off the line of scrimmage against press coverage.
Unfortunately, that leaves nearly three months of coach-speak about how great the players look running around in shorts and t-shirts. Chiefs fans probably aren’t on the edge of their seats to know how well second-round pick, Jeff Allen, does in the classroom.
The Chiefs veterans will show up to Arrowhead starting today to start the 2012 off-season program along with many of the rookies whose colleges have completed their spring semesters.
