The Kansas City Chiefs continue to put 2012 behind them while filling massive weaknesses on their roster. Free agent cornerback, Dunta Robinson, reportedly signed a 3-year contract with KC on Friday, filling one of the last remaining gaping black holes on the current roster.
Also, the Chiefs are (supposedly) keeping up their pursuit of another free agent cornerback, Sean Smith, of the Miami Dolphins despite Robinson’s signing. Depending on what Internet source you read, rumor has it the team would like to add both players, making Smith the starting corner opposite Brandon Flowers. Robinson, age 30, never known for his coverage skills even at his best, is a ferocious hitter that might be best suited to play the nickel corner spot or even move to safety alongside Pro Bowler Eric Berry.
Well, KC … this certainly isn’t your daddy’s Chiefs, is it?! If anything, head coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey are not acting like any front office seen around here since the early days of Carl and Marty and it could not be more fun to be a Chiefs fan right now.
Whether you like the deals the pair have made or not, you’ll have to admit that are not letting moss grow under their feet. Despite the fact that the new league season doesn’t technically begin until March 12, the Chiefs have traded for a quarterback in his prime that came within an eyelash of starting in the Super Bowl … locked up their #1 wide receiver and the best punter in the league to long-term contracts … franchised their starting left tackle … and renegotiated one of the worst contracts ever given to a defensive end in this town to free up space under the league salary cap.
And that’s just been in the last 10 days! Imagine what they will do when Saturday comes and they’re allowed to talk to every free agent available? Oh wait … that’s today! Seriously, Chiefs fans, this is much more fun than sitting around until August to pick through the leftover free agents like our front office used to do.
Going into the off-season, the Chiefs needed an upgrade at two roster spots in particular: quarterback and cornerback. They now have a former #1 overall draft pick in former 49er Alex Smith and by signing Robinson, have filled the other. If nothing else happens, they have a legitimate NFL cornerback playing opposite Flowers now. If they add a younger cornerback in the draft or through free agency, watch out!
Robinson was drafted #10 overall by the Houston Texans in the 2004 NFL Draft and started there until leaving in 2010 for a three-season stint with the Atlanta Falcons. Robinson was part of the salary purge in Atlanta to get the Falcons under the salary cap and was released last week along with running back Michael Turner and defensive end, John Abraham.
The team still needs to address three more areas, which could happen in free agency or the draft. They need to fill the void at middle linebacker left by the suicide of Jovan Belcher, the spot next to Dontari Poe on the defensive line now that Glenn Dorsey is probably leaving via free agency, and they need another wide receiver that can stretch the field AND catch the ball (sorry Jon Baldwin).
