KC Chiefs begin NFL free agency by signing TE Fasano and ex-MU QB Daniel

When the NFL free agency period officially began at 3 p.m. local time Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs made a huge part of their fan base deliriously happy by signing former University of Missouri star quarterback, Chase Daniel to be Alex Smith’s back-up. Of course, another section of their fans, the ones from the University of Kansas, were less than thrilled.

The team also signed former Miami Dolphin tight end, Anthony Fasano, to a contract while they officially completed the trade that brought Smith to Kansas City from San Francisco. Other reports say that the team is on the verge of signing former NY Jet defensive end, Mike DeVito, a solid player that worked with Chiefs new defensive coordinator, Bob Sutton, in New York.

Earlier reports said that the team might have been close to signing free agent DE Glenn Dorsey, but nothing has happened on that front and Dorsey is making a trip to San Francisco to talk contract with them. Of course, EVERYBODY seems to be talking to the 49ers this off-season.

So far this off-season, the Chiefs have made the following major roster moves:

  • Re-signed WR Dwayne Bowe to a 5-year contract
  • Re-signed punter Dustin Colquitt to a 5-year deal
  • Traded for QB Alex Smith
  • Put the franchise tag on OL Branden Albert
  • Released OL Eric Winston
  • Signed free agent CB Dunta Robinson to a 3-year deal
  • Signed TE Anthony Fasano to a 4-year deal
  • Signed QB Chase Daniel to a 3-year deal
  • And are on the verge of signing DE Mike DeVito

Daniel's signing has some Chiefs fans upset because they believe this all but screams to the rest of the NFL that the team will NOT take a QB with the #1 pick in April’s draft. They say that the team has played its hand with what they’ve done so far. Your Chiefs Examiner would calmly point out that it is only March 12, the draft isn’t until April 25, and a million things could happen between now and then. Plus, it would be folly to believe that the team is anywhere close to being finished in free agency.

If Andy Reid and John Dorsey continue to fill holes on the roster like this, the team will have the freedom to pick whomever they believe has the most upside on April 25 and if that happens to be West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith and he could be allowed to sit for a year and work on the holes in his game, so be it. Most Chiefs fans can easily live with that.
