Kaytee recalls bird food for possible salmonella contamination

On February 19th, 2013, Kaytee Products recalled several lots of their bird treats and greens items due to possible salmonella contamination from parsley flakes. If this sounds familiar, Honest Kitchen also recalled some of their dog food for the same reason a few days later. The parsley was supplied to Kaytee by Special Commodities, Inc.

No human or pet illnesses from the possible salmonella contamination have been reported yet. Also, none of Kaytee's finished products ever tested positive for salmonella. Kaytee is following FDA guidelines for recalls. Recalled products could have been produced as early as June of 2012.

Kaytee warns people in their announcement that humans can potentially contract salmonella by handling contaminated bird food products. Of course, pets also have the potential to catch salmonella by eating the products. Birds with salmonella poisoning may experience lethargy, lack of appetite, diarrhea, regurgitation, tender abdomen, and/or fever. A bird who has salmonella can also be a carrier for the bacteria, but not display any signs or symptoms of illness. If you suspect your bird has salmonella poisoning after consuming one of these recalled products, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

If you want to find out if a Kaytee product you purchased is on the list of recalled bird food you can visit the FDA's announcement here. The announcement also tells you how you should contact Kaytee about reimbursement and which states and countries the products were shipped to.
