BANGOR-- Kayla Merrill had three hits, including two home runs and five RBI to lead the Husson University Eagles softball team to a 11-6 victory over Bates in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at O'Keefe field.
Merrill pitched a complete game in the circle to lead the Eagles to a 5-3 game two victory.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in game one when Merrill drilled a two run homer during the bottom of the third inning. Kira Shaikh and Alayna Garbarino sparked a Bates rally that produced two runs during the top of the fourth inning.
Husson took a lead they would not give back when Haley Spiers ripped a double that brought home Jess Poulin during the Eagles half of the fourth inning. Merrill hit another two run homer to spark a three run fifth inning.
Sami Schultz hit a solo homer to lead off the Eagles sixth inning. Allison Hill also hit a two run double during the five run inning.
Bates took a 1-0 lead early in game two when Karen Lockhard led off the game with a single and came around to score. Lyndsey Merrill hit a two run homer during the bottom of the first inning to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Husson scored two runs during the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Merrill shut down Bates in the seventh inning to close out the doubleheader sweep.
Husson will finish their regular season when they host Thomas in a doubleheader on Thursday. Game two will be broadcasted live on 92.9 FM at approximately 6 p.m.
