Kaufman County saw some much needed rain on January 24-25, 2012. The county continues to be under Stage 3 water restrictions, however the fear that stage 4 restrictions are coming, is still a possibility. The driest summer in Texas history has wreaked havoc on the state, but so far the month of January has been the 2nd wettest on record.
The last 24 hours have brought Kaufman County towns from 2 to 3.5 inches of rain. Forney recorded nearly 3.5 inches of rain in that period of time. That should raise local lake levels, but it is not yet enough to get the county out of this drought. More rain is expected in the next 24 hours but it will not be as widespread or as heavy.
For as much as the rain is needed and appreciated, it does not come without a cost. Widespread flooding caused headaches for some homeowners and left a few vehicles stranded in high waters. One vehicle got stuck in the intersection of Bowie and FM 740 in Forney, but a tow truck came to the rescue and no one was injured. Though lighting strikes cause a few fires in the DFW area, there were no reports of damage from lighting in Kaufman County.
