The Na Pali Coast is a fifteen-mile stretch of rugged coastline on the north shore of the island of Kauai that can be 'the perfect getaway.' The sheer 'pali' or cliffs rise as high as 4,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean making this a very remote and pristine location..
Most of the Na Pali Coast is inaccessible and the only land access is via the Kalalau Trail, an 11-mile strenuous foot trail that crosses five different valleys (and countless smaller ones) and ends at Kalalau Beach. Trail guides are recommended as the hike into Kalalau is often challenging, and sometimes even dangerous.
Other options to access the awesome hidden coastline are by zodiac, kayak and helicopter.
Many movies have been filmed along this coast using the dramatic background of these steep cliffs including The Thorn Birds and portions of South Pacific. Most recently, The Perfect Getaway - a thriller starring Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich in theaters this weekend, showcases the rugged beauty of Na Pali when an adventurous young couple celebrates their honeymoon by backpacking and hiking the secluded trails to paradise. Watch the movie trailer here.
Driving directions to the Na Pali Coast:
Take Kuhio Highway (Route 56) and head to Haena State Park at the northwest end. The drive is 1-1/2 hours from the Lihue Airport and also Hilton Kauai Beach Resort..
If you enjoy the rugged outdoors, the island of Molokai is also a great place to visit. Read a short introductory to the island here
