Katy Perry is "allergic to gluten." The pop singer shared this tidbit with fans at the Fort Lauderdale stop of her "Prismatic World Tour" on Wednesday, July 2. Perry performed to a packed house at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla.
The 29-yaer-old explained to the audience that even though she's still a thirteen-year-old girl inside, she's taking big steps to be more like a typical adult. Growing her own garden is one of the things making her feel more mature. (Though taking her teddy bear and blanket on tour may make her sound like a toddler, she's an adult because she has a garden, she elaborated.)
Katy said she never knows what will pop up when she waters her garden and sprinkled a watering can filled with glitter over prop plants (some of them dances in sunflower costumes). A pizza box rose from beneath the stage.
The "Dark Horse" singer chastised her crew for playing a cruel joke on her by sending up pepperoni pizza, explaining she was "allergic to gluten." She called a young girl from the audience on stage and offered her the Papa John's pizza after asking the girl to promise into the microphone she would share it with her friends back at her seat. Katy pointed out the garlic dipping sauce in the box.
Perry referred to the pizza as the "one that got away" before launching into her next song, stating she developed a "gluten allergy" at age 29.
The "California Girl" didn't say if she tested positive for Celiac disease specifically. It's possible to still have a gluten intolerance without having Celiac. The problem digesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, is typically referred to as a sensitivity or intolerance instead of an allergy.
Katy Perry seemed very bummed about giving up gluten, but her fan was happy to munch on the pizza. They showed her on the monitor and she did indeed share it with those seated around her.
