She sang her new single, "Roar," in front of those in attendance, while dancing around in a boxing ring. Her outfit consisted of boxing shorts, boots, a tiger print bra, and some hand wraps. Somehow, Perry, 28, managed to pull the look off, looking quite sexy in the sporty clothing.
The MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but Perry chose to perform outside, taking advantage of the city's beautiful backdrop.
Having won four previous VMA's, Katy Perry released "Roar" on Aug. 10, and it has been a huge success for the pop singer.
Following the show, she tweeted to her fans about why she elected to wear the clothing she did for the performance, hinting that it was somewhat of a preview for the video of the song that will be coming out soon.
"Hitting #VMA carpet! Can't wait to show u my 👀 of the 🐯! Want a sneak peek at the #ROARVIDEO? Have your @Shazam on during preshow or show!" Perry tweeted.
The attire was a welcome surprise for many fans of boxing considering that Katy Perry has never indicated that she is a fan of the sport. Any attention the mega-star can bring is certainly nothing but a benefit.
Overall, the performance was certainly one of the more memorable of the evening. At least from a positive perspective. Unlike Miley Cyrus, Perry received mostly positive reviews, and closing out the show in such grand fashion should help promote the new song and album.
As part of her show, Perry also did more than singing and dancing, going through some exercises typical of what a boxer might go through. Some shadowboxing and jump rope work, much to the delight of the males in attendance, were also part of the routine.
Overall it was better than Lady Gaga's effort to start the show, and infinitely less trashy than Miley Cyrus' embarrassing performance, showing once again that Katy Perry gets it when it comes to embracing sexy without being bizarre or trashy.
