For three months, Katy Perry put herself on a rigorous detox diet that involved vitamins, supplements and a complete ban on booze. It was all part of her decision to improve her life after breaking up with Russell Brand, reported the Huffington Post on Dec. 20.
Determined to restore her emotional and physical health after having her "confidence kind of beaten down," Katy came up with her own prescription involving a detox cleanse.
"I did this whole cleanse where I didn't have any of the alcohol for three months -- that was devastating -- I did vitamins and supplements, and hikes and meditation and prayer," she detailed.
Prior to those three months, however, Katy took some time out for self-indulgence, announcing in the January issue of Marie Claire magazine that she was eating junk food and washing it down with booze.
"There were two weeks of my life after I found out the truth of my marriage where I was like, 'OK. All right. I can't feel this. This is too intense right now.' I was, like, just eating Flamin' Hot Cheetos and drinking, and that's it," she said in a candid TMI.
After the Cheetos un-diet indulgence, Katy's detox cleanse included shifting from coffee to green tea, according to Closer magazine.
And that's scientifically backed, according to WebMD. Researchers have found that green tea lowers your cholesterol, improves your heart health, boosts your brain power and even help you shed extra pounds. The reason: Green tea changes your metabolism so that you burn more calories from fat.
We did the math on just how Katy's detox cleanse may have helped her slim down:
- If she drank two typical coffee drinks daily prior to her cleanse, she was consuming 500 calories a day. Swap that for green tea, which is zero calories.
- The average five-ounce glass of wine has 123 calories. If Katy was drinking two glasses a day, that's 250 calories less she consumed each day.
End result: On her detox diet, Katy consumed more than 5,000 fewer calories per week, which could result in losing more than five pounds each month. Add in the hiking that she mentioned, and now we know why she looks so sleek in those photos.
