Pop star Katy Perry reached a social media milestone. According to on Jan. 31, the “Dark Horse” singer now has more than 50 million followers on Twitter.

Perry became Twitter’s top followed person back in November when she took the title from the recently troubled Justin Bieber. In July, Perry passed Lady Gaga, who held the title of queen of Twitter before Perry rose to the top.

What drew Perry to the top? The release of her new album “PRISM” played a large role as promotions regarding the release of the album gained he quite a bit of new followers. The overall social media campaigns organized by Perry gained her 18 million new followers in 2013. Her romantic life and live performances at the VMA’s and Grammys also played a role in the increase of followers.

Katy Perry also had over 660,000 mentions and 350,000 retweets in the past month alone. Those numbers are expected to continue as her latest single “Dark Horse” roared to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Surprised Katy Perry said that the success of the song wasn’t something she expected.

“This No. 1 is the most unexpected one I’ve ever had. ‘Dark Horse’ has been a dark horse of a song, since August when the KatyCats voted to release it early on iTunes, before ‘PRISM’ even came out. I’m so thrilled and grateful to have these moments.”

Now she can thank Twitter for some of that success.
