"By the Grace of God," the title of Katy Perry's new song, details the pain endured when her marriage to Russell Brand ended in divorce two years ago. Perry debuted the new track Monday at the 2013 iTunes festival and said it is part of her upcoming album, "Prism," citing an October 1 NME celebrity news report.
Perry surprised a capacity crowd at London's Roadhouse venue by singing her new single on the closing night of the month-long gala.
The multi-talented singer revealed a verse on the song, which speaks to the anguish from divorcing her husband in 2011. It also hints at her struggles with suicidal thoughts and how her sister empowered her to live.
Thank my sister for keeping my head above the water - when the truth was like swallowing sand..." the verse goes.
Katy's song ends with "I looked in the mirror and decided to stay,” a claim of victory over suicide.
Katy Perry and Russell Brand were married back in October of 2010 in a lavish traditional Hindu ceremony. Fourteen months later, the British comic filed for divorce and allegedly notified Katy via text message. The divorce song was her story and therapy, in many ways.
That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point. I asked myself, 'Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?'
All the songs are real-life moments. I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs," she said in a recent Billboard interview.
Perry also sang "I Kissed a Gurl," "Walking on Air," and "Roar," among other hit singles.
