Katie Herzig talks tunes, hits Boulder Feb. 29th

Though she’s now based in Nashville, singer songwriter Katie Herzig was born in Colorado and loves coming back home.  The alluring artist released her debut solo album years ago, but in 2011 she let truly showed the world what she was capable of.  After years of writing music for film and television, Herzig decided to once again write music for herself.  What developed was The Waking Sleep, her first release on Downtown/Mercer Street Records, which is a beautifully captivating, vulnerably honest record.  As she prepares to perform at the Fox Theatre in Boulder on Wednesday, February 29th, I tracked the talented musician down and asked her a few questions about playing in Colorado, writing music, and life on the road.

You grew up in Fort Collins- how do you like coming back and performing in Colorado?  Are the fans good to you?

I love it.  It's conveniently located in the middle of the country where we pass through often so it's always such a great combo of seeing family and friends while playing to rooms of some new and some long-time fans.  I definitely feel the love.  It flows both ways.

"Closest I Get" was recently featured on Grey's Anatomy and "Lost And Found" was on the trailer for We Bought A Zoo.  When stuff like that happens, do you get an outpouring of people who hear/recognize your music and started crawling out of the woodwork to either congratulate you or stalk you?

Yes it's mostly just either hearing from people I already know that they heard it, so they think I've "made it," which makes me laugh.  And then people show up on Twitter and Facebook and such who are new fans who tracked my music down after hearing a taste of it on TV.

What's one thing you can't do without while on tour?

iPhone.  It helps me feel connected to the rest of the world and the people I love.  It's changed touring.  It helps going to a new town everyday feel less daunting.  You can always GPS where you're at and look up what's nearby on the go.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Nothing crazy. It usually just involves last minute set-list cramming and getting ready.  Sometimes it’s seriously last moment!

What's the weirdest thing to ever inspire a song?

Hmm.  I once saw the movie V For Vendetta and immediately went home and wrote a song.  I've also written some weird songs for some TV/commercial things that are so specific and random.

What was your goal with The Waking Sleep?

To make a great record that moved myself and others.

What else can we expect to hear and see from you in 2012?

Good question!  I have touring over next few months but after that I’m not sure.  Probably more touring and music-making, or something completely non-musical for a bit.  We'll see.

If you could pick anyone to be the #1 fan of your music, who would it be?

My niece and nephew!  I'm not sure that'll happen though I've been my niece's second or third favorite for a while after Ingrid Michaelson and Taylor Swift.

Catch Herzig at the Fox Theatre in Boulder on Wednesday, February 29th.  Doors open at 8:00pm and the show starts at 8:30pm.  It's an all ages show and tickets cost $12 in advance or $14 (plust an extra $2 for fans under twenty-one) at the door.
