Morning maven Katie Couric opened up to Jimmy Kimmel about an awkward date she once had with fellow talk show host Larry King during which she claims he lunged at her. The tell-all took place on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and was reported in US Magazine on Feb. 1.
She recounted the experience to Kimmel beginning with King arriving in a Lincoln town car to pick her up. The 56-year-old Couric says, “We go to this Italian restaurant. They put us right next to each other like they do all the men and their 'nieces' … and he ordered veal poached in chicken stock because he had just had a quadruple bypass, which was hot."
King, who is 23 years older than Couric, initially asked her out when both were living in Washington D.C. Couric explains that at the time, she was receptive to all invitations because the then 30-year-old viewed them as learning experiences, no matter how well or how badly they turned out.
After dinner she noticed they were crossing Memorial Bridge which was not the route back to her place so she inquired about their destination. King told her “My place,” and Couric told Kimmel she was like, 'Oh, mother of God. Oh God!'
Upon entering Larry’s place, the décor was even more off-putting according to Katie. She described it to Jimmy as being covered in proclamations like ‘Larry King Day’ and having keys to every city on display. Katie said, “That was sexy.”
She said the two of them sat there for a while before, "What can I say? He lunged. … the whole situation was out of a bad Lifetime movie."
Kimmel mumbled "Incredible" between his own chuckles as Couric related her story.
She says the evening ended cordially enough when she finally said, 'Larry, you are such a nice man, but I would like to meet someone a little closer to my age.'
The now 79-year-old King also told Kimmel about the date when he guested on the show in 2009. The CNN talk show host’s version differed slightly in that he claims they couldn’t go to Couric’s apartment because her then roommate and his later executive producer, Wendy Walker was there. He told Kimmel that nothing happened between him and Katie.
