Katie Couric gets married: Her sugar-free low-carb wedding day diet plus Zumba

Although it's now cancelled, Katie Couric devoted many episodes of her talk show to weight loss tips ranging from protein power to sacrificing sugar. And on those episodes, she regularly mentioned her upcoming wedding. Now she's gotten married, reported People magazine on Saturday, and we've got the skinny on how she shed pounds for that walk down the aisle.

One of Katie's most frequent guests on her talk show: Dr. Mark Hyman, author of "The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet: Activate Your Body's Natural Ability to Burn Fat and Lose Weight Fast." Shun sugar, watch out for wheat and power up with protein. At the end, you'll have overcome your food addictions while shedding extra pounds on the low-carb diet.

In particular, Dr. Hyman and Katie are proponents of the sugar-free diet trend. And Katie's taken it one step further: She's teamed up with her friend Laurie David to battle sugar both in processed foods and on the tables across the nation.

Laurie urges families to eat together and cook meals together. She's authored a cookbook for which Katie wrote the preface: "The Family Cooks: 100+ Recipes to Get Your Family Craving Food That's Simple, Tasty, and Incredibly Good for You."

Appearing on Katie's talk show recently, Laurie also addressed the documentary that the two of them co-produced: "Fed Up," designed to send a message to families, food companies and politicians to become aware of the dangers in sugar. It addresses the future for a nation where childhood obesity has become an epidemic.

"That was incredibly fulfilling for me," she told Fox News on Monday. Katie hopes that the film will have an impact by focusing on "what we’re becoming as a country in terms of our girth."

Among the highlights of the documentary: Dr. Robert H. Lustig, viewed as a leader in determining what really works to battle childhood obesity. He authored the landmark book "Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease."

Practicing what she preaches, Katie follows a sugar-free diet. She even created a 10-day challenge for others that included a complete ban on sugar, from soda to soup.

As for exercise? Katie hopes that she'll be a role model by going public about her own fitness regime. Katie has used her Facebook page to promote working out.

"I'm trying to exercise more, you should too," she declared. Among her favorite fitness forms: Spinning, which she used to help raise money for cancer research by hosting an event at New York's Flywheel spinning studio.

Katie's other pre-wedding workouts include Pilates, dance and a gym boot-camp program. Part of her charm: Making fun of her own fitness follies.

For example, you can find a YouTube video of Katie performing a Zumba routine. Her caption: "Friday morning humiliation! Hopefully I get better."

Katie's not the only celebrity zipping along to Zumba. Others include Jennifer Lopez, Madonna and and Jordin Sparks.

But does Zumba really burn enough calories to use it for a pre-wedding day workout? If you Zumba-dance for an hour, you can burn about 500 calories. Just enough for a few slices of wedding cake.
