What's bothering you so much that you feel, as the song says, as if you just can't take it anymore? Katie Couric invited Dr. Mark Hyman to visit her August 20 talk show to provide holistic solutions for common health problems such as backaches, memory problems and constipation. On the August 20 episode, the two dished on concerns ranging from pain (ouch) to pooping (ick):
- Back pain bugging you? Dr. Hyman told Katie that turmeric can provide a holistic solution. You can use turmeric in your food or try taking turmeric supplements, such as Swanson Premium Brand Turmeric Whole Root Powder (click for details). In addition, he recommends doing stretches and showed Katie how to do a reverse back stretch to help with problems caused by leaning over a computer all day. Tip: You might also want to consider getting a book about exercises specifically designed to counteract your computer time, such as Yoga for Computer Users: Healthy Necks, Shoulders, Wrists, and Hands in the Postmodern Age (click for details).
- Memory problems causing you to forget too many important issues? Author of "The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook: More than 175 Ultra-Tasty Recipes for Total Health and Weight Loss" (click for details), Dr. Hyman suggests taking fish oil supplements. Tip: Dislike fish "burpees"? Try a flavored variety, such as Barlean's Organic Oils Fresh Catch Fish Oil, Orange Flavor (click for details). You can also take coconut butter (MCT or medium chain triglycerides) for brain fuel—1 tbsp a day of extra virgin coconut oil.
- Constipation: If tummy trouble is causing you to feel miserable, Dr. Hyman recommends taking daily probiotics in the form of 50 billion CFUs of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. In addition, try two tbsp daily of ground flaxseeds (which contain fiber, lignin, and omega-3 fats). Drink lots of water, and take 150–300mg of magnesium citrate twice daily in capsule form. Our tip: For a kickstart breakfast (in every sense of the word), try flaxseed on your cereal or consider Enjoy Life, Perky's Crunchy Flax Cereal (click for details).
