It's no surprise that Kate Middleton's engagement ring is famous. Even before the ring graced Kate's finger, it was already famous around the world since it belonged to Prince William's mother, the late Princess Diana. A generation later, millions watched Kate celebrate her engagement to Prince William and marry him while wearing the gigantic sapphire ring. On Friday, May 9, HELLO! magazine reported that the ring is in fact so famous that it tops a British list of the 20 most famous rings in the world.
Kate's ring, a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds set in white gold, is worth a whopping £300,000, which under the current exchange rate is equivalent to $505,331. The fact that the ring is now the engagement ring of two immensely popular royals has meant that it's value has shot through the roof over the years. Back in 1981, when Prince Charles gave Princess Diana the ring, it was worth only £28,000 ($47,165).
Following the Duchess of Cambridge's ring is another ring that belongs to a British royal. Queen Elizabeth's engagement ring from Prince Philip, a three-carat diamond surrounded by five smaller diamonds set in platinum, comes in at second place. While the First Lady Michelle Obama is not royal, she does have the third most famous ring in the world with her relatively modest diamond engagement ring from President Barack Obama.
According to jewelry expert Vashi Dominguez, Kate's ring has appreciated in value faster than any other ring on the list. Yet while Kate has the most famous ring in the world, she doesn't have the ring that's valued the most. That distinction belongs to Beyonce's 18-carat diamond set in platinum, valued now at a staggering £5.8 million ($9.8 million). Following Beyonce is Kim Kardashian. The soon-to-be Mrs. West's engagement ring is now worth £5.1 million ($8.7 million).
While Kate Middleton and Beyonce are less flashy with their rings, Kim Kardashian has had no problems showing off her ring to the world after getting engaged to Kanye West. She immediately posted a photo of it on Instagram after the proposal at AT&T Park. She even once posted a photo of her then 6-month-old daughter North holding the ring in her hand, showing the world just how massive the ring is.
