Kate Middleton loves her portrait, so why the public criticism? (Video)

Kate Middleton revealed her first portrait Friday and wouldn't you know it, the critics came out in droves. What would the “Royals” do without the paparazzi, tabloids and critics? Seriously though, Middleton looks at herself in the mirror probably, oh, say, a gazillion times a day, right? So, those who only know her from pictures are criticizing her portrait, really?

The Award-winning artist Paul Emsley did admit to taking some artistic liberties by tweaking her eye color a little bit so it would match her blouse. Maybe this is why the critics can't seem to see “Kate” in the painting? A person's eyes are their “window to the soul” making them maybe the most important statement ever.

Middleton's most important critic, outside of her own opinion, could very well be Prince William. With her husband right by her side, Fox News reported her as saying the painting was, “just amazing” and “William said, 'It’s absolutely beautiful,'” reported abc NEWS. So there you have it. A pleased royal husband likes it and obviously thinks it more than just beautiful, calling it “absolutely beautiful”.

Consider this: Middleton, 31 only sat for the painting twice. Few could paint someone to their likeness in two visits.

The criticism ranges from her looking chubby and 50 (Carol Hagen on the Sun), unpleasant and from the “twilight franchise”(Guardian arts writer Charlotte Higgins via Fox News), “well haggard” (the Sun), to “Kate's mouth looked clenched, her eyes looked dead, and that the whole thing had 'sepulchral gloom' about it.” (Higgins via Fox News) Seriously, Higgins? Did you even look at the painting? You can see forever in those eyes.

Hasn't anyone noticed this is the look that we see from Middleton, the one that shows the “vulnerable" side of her. If only he had kept her green eyes in tact maybe it would have worked for everyone. Oh well, better luck next time.

Good thing the critics had no “real” say in the matter as the world is happier for having seen the painting of Catherine the Duchess of Chambridge, Kate Middleton, go on show. Among the fans of the portrait are Richard Stone who has painted the royal family before. He said, "So often with official portraits they can be rather stiff and starchy, but this has a lovely informality about it, and a warmth to it."(Fox News)

“The Cambridges later attended a private breakfast reception at the London gallery to mark the unveiling. Among the guests were Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton and her brother and sister Pippa and James.”(Sun) This is one of her few appearances since she became pregnant and fell ill with severe morning sickness.
