Kate Jonasse, a 4th kyu Aikido student at West End Aikido in Sebastopol, CA, is having her "Annual K-Tech Automotive Car Giveaway" this Saturday. The event will happen at her automotive shop’s location in Sebastopol (the address is below).
The idea for the car giveaway came to Kate when she realized she had a good workable car sitting on her lot that was available to what she thought of as "a good home." She contacted local automotive suppliers and they donated all the parts that were needed to get the car in top working condition. The car was smogged for free by a local smog shop. The Sonoma County automotive community really got behind Kate’s plan.
While this was happening, she put out word in local newspapers and with flyers asking for nominations from individuals, groups, organizations and churches. She asked them submit the name and the reasons why the person they were nominating deserved a free car.
Out of the hundreds of names submitted, she selected a woman who was a single mother with two children who was very involved in community work. With the gift of the car came a year’s free automotive service. The woman, who had had to reply on public transportation and friends, now had reliable Honda “Civic.” The event was further publicized by the local newspaper, PRESS DEMOCRAT (where this year's event has already been written about) and KGO Channel 7 News in San Francisco.
The car this year, a fully loaded 2002 Buick “Regal” was given to K-Tech by a couple in Santa Rosa after reading about the event last year. This year’s recipient, Harmony Simmons, is a young mother who is spending up to four hours a day on public transportation. Kate wrote,”[She] grew up in the foster care system and has pulled herself up by her bootstraps to provide for herself and her daughter, and to help other foster youth.” Harmony will also receive a free year's service from Kate.
The times Saturday are 2:00 to 3:30 PM. Light food will be available from a great local Mexican restaurant, Viva Mexicana. Drinks will be provided by K-Tech Automotive. This will be a festive occasion. Please come and support this great work in the community that Kate is doing, and meet Harmony.
Parking will be available on K-Tech’s lot.
See you all there!
