Kate Hudson appears to drink wine while pregnant in Argentina

Pregnant actress Kate Hudson was caught on camera drinking what appeared to be a glass of red wine Saturday night while dining out in Buenos Aires with her  boyfriend Matt Bellamy, son Ryder and members of U2, including Bono.

Kate was spotted enjoying dinner after Bellamy and his band, MUSE, performed three shows over the weekend in Argentina as the opening act for U2’s 360 Tour.

Medical experts recommend that women not drink alcohol of any kind during pregnancy and nursing. Medical practitioners also discourage alcohol consumption, including, beer, wine, wine coolers or liquor during the period in which they try to become pregnant. Wine bottles in the U.S. usually carry a warning specific to pregnant women on their labels.

According to the March of Dimes Web site, drinking alcohol during pregnancy can lead to a variety of physical and mental birth defects in babies. Collectively referred to as “fetal alcohol syndrome,” defects can include emotional and behavioral problems; mental retardation and learning disabilities; and defects that harm organs. Some children experience a combination of these problems.

About 40,000 babies are born in the U.S. with fetal alcohol syndrome each year, according to the March of Dimes. About one in 12 women admitted to drinking while pregnant in recent government surveys.

In addition to fetal alcohol syndrome, experts say, mothers-to-be risk miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth if they drink while pregnant.

Experts disagree about what level of alcohol consumption may be safe during pregnancy. Most recommend that women consume no alcohol during pregnancy, but a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Healthreports one or two drinks a week while pregnant actually may give an infant a developmental advantage.
