Kate Graves

The local built environment informs Kate Graves’ art. She is interested in observing creation and erosion in the natural world, and how these cycles are reflected in aspects of human civilization and culture. She chooses to document buildings that have long been held in the flux of unseen forces; including time, and gravity.

On view from June 6-July 3 at the Trenton Social, the REAL ESTATE show features industrial plein air watercolor paintings and two cast bronze sculptures of Trenton buildings. Graves’ “Zero Tolerance Area” series began in 1995 as a photographic essay documenting the crumbling, often ornate exteriors of the many abandoned buildings in Trenton. The assembled works are portraits meant to evoke the buildings’ social history and trajectory: together they form a survey of how the chosen subjects have navigated time and place. They are REAL ESTATE, properties ripe to be re-imagined for the future.
