Watch part 2 of the Kate Gosselin Today Show interview
Kate Gosselin appeared on the Today Show this morning as part of her and husband Jon's dueling interviews today (Jon is scheduled to appear on the slightly more low rent E! Entertainment News this evening). It's her first television interview since the announcement of the couple's separation and pending divorce.
NBC, being just as nimble as TLC in working the ratings as much as possible, stretched the interview out into two segments. In the first, Meredith Viera mainly focused on Jon and Kate's marriage and what went wrong. Kate offered up little more than what she's said in the past, that her and Jon's "goals" were different -- but neither of them have really articulated what those goals are, although we can probably guess, especially when it comes to Kate. On how Kate is doing, she said "as well as she could be," and repeated her mantra:
My focus still, as I've always said, as I will always say, is the health and well-being of my children as well as myself.
When asked if divorce was what she really wanted, Kate replied:
This is not what any mother sets out for her children... [but] it's necessary, it has to take place.
Kate has previously been spotted without her wedding ring, but now it seems that was just a "trial run" as she was wearing it again this morning. Viera asked Kate why she was wearing it:
For [the children]. I don't want to upset them... I don't want to shock them.
Kate on why the marriage didn't last:
Clearly, [Jon's] goals are not my goals... I think it's very clear that we are two different people at this point with two different sets of goals.
Kate also responded to Jon's assertion that she was the one that wanted an end to their marriage, and that she stated last October that it was over:
Clearly, [Jon and I] both have completely different takes on what happened between us, but I feel that the details of that -- for the sake of my kids -- need to remain private... It was very mutual, if anything.
Obviously, ideally, parents stay married... I go back very often to our vow renewal in Hawaii, I think very often of it. And in that moment, I meant those vows and there was no option for us other than to be together and so much changed.
When Viera mentioned that "it takes two to tango" and asked about Kate's possible role in the divorce, she struggled for words:
Nobody's perfect. I was not perfect... Obviously it was, it, takes two... I don't know to be honest.
Asked if she still had feelings for Jon, Kate responded:
When I think back to the Jon that I knew, [I still love him].
