Says R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, “Kate Bernheimer is reinventing the fairy tale.” Her collection Horse, Flower, Bird, illustrated by sometime Naropa instructor Rikki DuCornet, and published by Coffee House Press, exemplifies her commitment to deepening and updating this trusty method.

Bernheimer edits a journal called Fairy Tale Review. The reading period JUST ended for submissions to their upcoming brown issue, guest edited by Timothy Schaffert, author of Devils in the Sugar Shop, The Singing and Dancing Daughters of God, and The Phantom Limbs of The Rollow Sisters. They hadn’t updated the submission page this afternoon when I sent in a couple of the Dim Jim shorts only to receive a friendly bleep informing me the reading period had closed; but future announcements about submissions would be posted soon.

Kate Bernheimer is the author of two novels and the children’s book The Girl in the Castle Inside the Museum, a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year. She has edited three anthologies with Fairy Tale Review, including My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales, forthcoming from Penguin Books this year.
