Kate Atkinson named Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

Kate Atkinson, author of the Jackson Brodie mystery series, has been named to the ranks of the Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). Prince Charles presented Atkinson with her MBE award, designated "for service to Literature" in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, in a Feb. 9, 2012 ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Larry Finlay spoke for Atkinson’s U.K. publisher, Transworld, in The Bookseller. "We are absolutely delighted that Kate Atkinson has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours," he said. "It's a fitting tribute to a wonderful writer who has contributed so richly to the landscape of British literature. We are enormously proud to be her publisher."

Atkinson began her literary career with the 1995 novel Behind the Scenes at the Museum, which won the Whitbread Book of the Year award.  Human Croquet appeared in 1997, and Emotionally Weird followed in 1999.

In 2004 Atkinson published Case Histories, the first of her books to feature private investigator Jackson Brodie. Atkinson's Edinburgh detective continued his adventures in One Good Turn (2006), in When Will There Be Good News (2008) and in Started Early, Took My Dog (2010).

The British Broadcasting Company adapted Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie books for its six-part television series, Case Histories, in June 2011 with Jason Isaacs in the starring role.  The broadcast received the 2011 TV Dagger Award. U.S. audiences viewed Case Histories in October 2011 when it aired on the Public Broadcasting System
