Bangor, ME-- Elea Kass scored five of her game high 17 points in overtime to lead the Orono Red Riots girls basketball team to a 45-40 victory over the Piscataquis community high school (PCHS) Pirates Tuesday morning at the Bangor Auditorium.
The Red Riots held a 22-18 halftime lead behind a strong effort from their lone senior Jillian Woodward.
Woodward recorded 12 points and nine rebounds in the first 16 minutes of action.
PCHS freshman center Delani Bennett was limited to 13 minutes because of foul trouble. She played less than a quarter in the first half and Woodward took advantage.
Bennett picked up her fourth foul just 1:28 into the third quarter. Orono held a 22-20 lead at the time.
The Red Riots outscored PCHS 16-8 with Bennett on the bench. Pirates coach Brian Gaw put Bennett back in the game with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and his team down 38-28.
PCHS outscored Orono 10-0 in the next 4:54. Bennett fouled out with 1:06 remaining in the fourth quarter when she got tangled up with Woodward and both players were called for a foul.
Both teams had chances in the final minute. Woodward missed a layup. Cory Fellows missed two free throws for the Pirates. The game went into overtime with the scored tied at 38.
Kass hit a three pointer to start the scoring in overtime. Kass hit two free throws late in the overtime session to seal the Red Riots victory.
Woodward finished with 16 points, 17 rebounds, one block, one assist and one steal for the Red Riots. Katie Sypher chipped in with eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Hannah Clement added three points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Katie Smith scored one point.
Orono shot 10-18 from the free throw line. PCHS shot 2-8.
Six players on the PCHS roster were not born the last time the Pirates girls team made an appearance at the Bangor Auditorium in a tournament game during the 1995/1996 season.
Alex Speed scored 10 of her team high 16 points in the second half for the Pirates. Speed also recorded seven steals and three assists.
Fellows recorded 10 points, 16 rebounds and two steals. Jesse Bell and Bennett put in four points each. Mikayla Dow, Jordynne Littlefield and Abi Riitano put in two points each. Dow also recorded three rebounds and three steals.
Orono (16-3) will take on Dexter Friday, February 22nd at 2 p.m. in a semifinal game.
PCHS finishes the season with a 12-8 record.
