Karli Theberge earns fourth female athlete of the week

Each week during the high school sports season the High School Sports Examiner and the Eastern Maine Sports Blog will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations to Marc at

Past winners

2014 spring season- Week 9- June 16th-June 21st


Karli Theberge- Hermon- softball- The sophomore pitched a complete game three hitter with one walk and two strikeouts in 6-1 class B regional final victory over previously undefeated Gardiner, who was averaging over 10 runs per game coming into the Eastern Maine final against the Hawks. Theberge also went 1-3 with one RBI and pitched a complete game shutout in 6-0 class B state championship victory over Wells. It was the second state championship in the last five years for the Hawks.

Theberge joins Gage Feeney (Washington Academy), Garet Beal (Jonesport-Beals), Kayla Dube (PVHS), Isaiah Bess (Penquis), Max McHugh (Central), and Parise Rossignol (Van Buren) as the only student/athletes that have been named athlete of the week at least four times.

Runner up

Olivia Smith- Calais- softball- Pitched a two hitter with 15 strikeouts in 4-2 regional championship victory over Bucksport. Pitched a two hitter in 1-0 loss to Madison in class C state title game.

Other nominations

Abby Knowlton- Deer Isle-Stonington- softball- Had a double, home run, three RBI, and pitched the complete game to earn the win in 10-7 class D semifinal victory over Washburn.

Kate Cundiff- Calais- softball- Had a double, triple, and three RBI in 4-2 class C regional championship victory over Bucksport.

Melissa Cantafio- Limestone- softball- Pitched a three hitter with 11 strikeouts in 9-2 class D regional final victory over Deer Isle-Stonington.
