Karen Perrin, locked in a bathroom, is being compared to a character from the movie The Shawshank Redemption after burrowing through a door to escape from a restroom. It all went down when the woman was working in Washington, DC at a private family foundation. Working late, Perrin made one final trip to the ladies room at 10 p.m. before leaving.
According to a Huffington Post report dated Dec. 12, 2013, when Perrin tried to exit the bathroom, she discovered that she was locked inside.
Although the woman was in a panic after being locked in the bathroom, she finally managed to escape by boring a hole through the wall with a rod. She reached through the hole that she had made and unlocked the door, finally reaching freedom after hours of being trapped.
Karen Perrin herself said that she thought about the Shawshank Redemption during her ordeal. She reportedly does not know why the door was locked, and she is taking several days off from work following the incident. Perrin had this to say about the situation:
"I came undone," she said. "I was crying. I felt like I was escaping a bad dream, like when you have a nightmare and you wake up and your heart is pounding and you realize, 'Oh, I was just dreaming. Did that just happen. Am I OK?'"
Karen Perrin isn't the only person to find herself in a similar pickle. An NHL player named Joel Ward found himself in a similar predicament when he wound up locked in a bathroom stall. However, rather than burrowing his way through a door to release the lock and escape to freedom, Ward used Twitter to send out an alert.
Ward sent out a photo of himself stuck behind a heavy wooden bathroom door on Twitter after sending a text message to a fellow teammate that went unanswered. The bathroom door did not have a gap at the bottom where he could slide through, and the door would not open from either side. There was a space at the top, however.
It took 45 minutes before staff at the hotel swooped in with a ladder and brought Ward to safety as he climbed over the door to freedom. Of course, the entire thing was documented online. Check out the video on the left side of the page to see what happened when Ward was locked in the bathroom and made his own very un- Karen Perrin -like escape.
