The PEN/Faulkner award winner for fiction was announced Wednesday, April 2, 2014. And the winner is… Karen Joy Fowler! Karen’s book, “We are all completely beside ourselves” was described, by one of the judges, as a superb novel that is comical and smart with a surprising, emotional punch.

The story centers around a sharp-tongued woman why was raised by parents who were scientists. She had a chimpanzee that served as both a sibling and an experiment. This book puts a unique spin on family dynamics.
Karen’s concern for these chimpanzees put her on this path.

This is her sixth book and it took ten years to write. About the same time of the book release, congress began legislature on getting chimpanzees registered as endangered species. This will stop invasive medical testing on these animals.
